The juniors turned out in force to play in glorious weather for the Eric Gibson Claret Jug on Sunday 7th May. Twenty-nine competitors played in 5, 10, and 18 hole competitions with some very competitive scoring. Lots of smiles were on display and a fun atmosphere was there for all to see around the course. Behaviour both on and off the course was fantastic (and that was just the parents!!). The children playing all did the Junior Section proud.
The 5-hole competition was very close with just a shot separating many of the players. Molly Campbell ran out the eventual winner with a score of 29. Second place went to Jessica Jenkins with 31 and third place to Millie Marsh with 32. “Wait a second” I hear you cry … where are all the boys? Well, 4th place was taken by Noah Morgan with 33 but it was definitely a day for the girls which shows the developing and inclusive nature of the section.
The 10-hole competition was more successful for the boys with Sam Turton coming out on top with 25 points, which was 5 under his junior handicap. Millie Mee came second with 23 points followed closely by Freddie Waby on 22 points. All these players are developing fine golf swings and it’s great to see them continue to develop as they experience the ups and downs of the game.
The Claret Jug itself is awarded to the winner of the 18-hole competition and it was great to see our Junior Captain, Steph Firth, winning with 36 points. In close pursuit were Sam Teanby and William Guggerty who both put up a good showing as they begin to transition to the 18-hole format of the game.
Special thanks, must go to Richard Hayden who supplied the Claret Jug and a replica for the winner to keep which is a very generous gesture. I know Eric would have been pleased to have seen so many juniors playing and demonstrating an enthusiasm for golf and Beeston Fields Golf Club.
