Junior Open - Sunday 25th June

The Beeston Fields junior Open was played in glorious sunshine once again this year with a mixed field of players from around the County participating.  Thirty two players competed for a range of trophies from an 18 hole gross to a 5 hole competition for beginners and young golfers.  As usual, the standard of golf was excellent with behaviour both on and off the course also mirroring the high standards of play.

The main event, the Junior Challenge Cup, was won by Sam Greatorex of Coxmoor GC with a net score of 67, winning on countback over the final six holes from Stephanie Firth (Beeston Fields GC).  A very close run event with a lot of players within a few shots of the winner.  The gross event was just as close with Jack Sipos of Ruddington Grange GC shooting a 77 to just pip Charlotte Hazelwood (Notts Ladies – Holinwell) with another countback but his time over the back 9.

With all these countbacks my head was starting to spin so fortunately the 10 hole event was won by a clear margin as Ethan Wan of Rufford Park GC shot a net 34 over 10 holes to win by two shots.  Following in the footsteps of his sister, Amelia, it was nice to see Ethan play so well around Beeston.  Zak Harrison and Conor Smedley, both of Beeston Fields GC, were in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The 5 hole event was dominated by Beeston Fields young golfers with a fantastic score of 24 being carded by Molly Campbell, who beat the runners up, Aiden Elston and Billy Harding by six clear shots.  Since running 5 hole events at Beeston for that last 4 years this is by far the best score we have witnessed (a course record I suppose) and so congratulations go to Molly who will now be making the step up to playing 10 holes in our future events.  It’s great to see players progressing in this way so congratulations to Molly and all the participants who played on the day. A special thank you also goes to Martha Greatorex from Rufford Park who has played in all our 5 hole events since we started the format as once again she played very nicely around Beestons sometimes challenging set up.

My final word this year though goes to Max Boulter (Beeston Fields), who whilst playing in the 5 hole event managed to win the nearest the pin competition on the 3rd hole.  This great achievement was followed up with a nine putt which we had a laugh about afterwards in the clubhouse.  If there’s one guarantee in golf it’s that it’ll test your patience to the max (no pun intended Max!).
